The latest report from the french statistics on Agriculture help measuring the importance of the agri-food sector in the French trade balance. While the trade deficit in 2011 breaks records at 69.56 billion euros, the French agri-food trade surplus reaches 11.6 billion euros (+ 3.6 billion compared to 2010). The first French market remains the European Union (56% of the total value). The turnover of French agriculture for export is based on the processed food products (60% of the total value), rather than on raw products (40%).
This trend of increase in the surplus began in late 2010. It is pulled by the dynamism of alcoholic beverages sales to non-EU countries (Asia, USA). Shipments of wine (champagne included) and cognac have increased of 1.06 billion euros in 2011, including 925 million to non-EU countries (87.3% of the increase). Imports of alcoholic beverages rose 12.8% in value, reaching 2.89 billion euros, while exports increased by 10.7% to 12.36 billion euros. Imports of alcoholic beverages, including imports from Europe, are dominated by brandies and alcohols (69% of value), while for exports it is rather the wine and champagne (58%).
